Q1. In order to meet the new carbon emission limits what examples can you tell us about of technology coming on line in the near future and what policy is required.

A. Don Paul – We need to look at Fuel and Renewable Fuel Standards. Coal and Fossil fuels will be with us for a long time so CO2 reduction is vital. The scale up of CCS technology is essential. Also the possibility of Carbon as a feedstock is also being investigated.

Q2. What do you feel the impact of Waxman Markey is going to be.

A. Jim Slutz - The Waxman Markey bill is huge and we do not have the time to talk indepth. The bill starts the process of Cap & Trade, but we need to see how the final bill will look. We need to look beyond just Carbon Markets and Cap & Trade and look to Renewable Portfolio Standards and the dramatic effect on energy investment. This together with technology will be covered in more detail in future webinars.

Q3. Audience Member: Dr. Schipper, you said that the cost of battery for autos was $700/km of range. I don’t see that the $700.km number can be correlated to anything. So, related to this, my question is: Did I write down the wrong number or did I write down the right number with the wrong context? Did you give us a battery cost per kilometer range?

A. Lee Schipper - I should have said between $200-400/km of range. In other words, if you want 10 km of autonomy on batteries, you pay $2000-4000. The basis of this is indications that the Volt will have $20K of batteries to go 40miles = 57kilometers. The point is that we're talking a lot of money, and ought to compare what kind of fuelled hybrid I can buy for that kind of money, AND how that cost drives the size of cars down (so they can go farther on a given set of batteries, and thereby drive the cost/km down).
